United Black Athletes to Help Host Back-to-School Drive

DURHAM – The Duke United Black Athletes (UBA) organization is partnering with GROWTH NC and the West Durham Baptist Church Youth Ministry to host a back-to-school drive on Saturday, Aug. 14th from 2-4 p.m.

"Partnering with GROWTH NC and the West Durham Baptist Church Youth Ministry for the back-to-school drive is a great opportunity for UBA and Duke to connect to the community we are in," UBA Co-President and Blue Devil women's lacrosse defender Alexis Joseph said. "UBA does not see this event as "charity". As Duke athletes, we acknowledge how fortunate we are and how many resources we are afforded. This is one way we as athletes can share our resources while bonding with new people".

The event, which is set to give away free school supplies and sports gear, will be held at the West Durham Baptist Church at 1901 Athens Ave., Durham, N.C. 27707. Masking is required for the drive.

"We are extremely excited to join forces with the United Black Athletes on Duke's campus during GROWTH's upcoming Back-to-School Giveaway Event that will reach, inspire, support, and empower not only young girls but the greater Durham community," GROWTH NC Co-Founders Taylor Dorsey-Flowers and Asha Freeland said. "Coming together and making a difference in our community and beyond."
